Magic: The Gathering, Pokemon (é…) e Yu-Gi-Oh! bombando nos jogos colecionáveis. Destaque também para o D&D Miniatures em 7º lugar, já que o jogo morreu faz tempo. Acredito que pode ser o poder da 4ª edição do D&D que deu uma sobrevida as miniaturas, já que elas são ideias para os combates táticos desta edição.

Entre as miniaturas não colecionáveis a Games Workshop continua reinando com suas linhas imbatíveis de Warhammer, seguida sempre pela Privateer Press.

Essa é a lista que mais nos interessa. Nenhuma novidade com o Dungeons & Dragons no topo, mas a segunda posição, que diferença! O Pathfinder RPG disparou e tomou de assalto o final de 2009, atropelando as linhas de Warhammer Fantasy e Warhammer 40K e o World of Darkness para a 5ª posição. Aliás Warhammer que também não fez nada feio, já que em menos de um semestre também chegou quebrando tudo com a nova edição do Warhammer Fantasy RPG e o Warhammer 40K: Rogue Trader, bem de acordo com o que Erik Mona, editor chefe da Paizo apresentou em sua palestra na NeoCon – o Dungeons & Dragons 4ª edição ainda é a principal marca  no mercado de RPG, mas 2009 viu o surgimento de um bom número de títulos e jogos com potencial para brigarem pelo segundo lugar. Agora só falta as vendas subirem mesmo…

A recente lista tem o sugestivo nome de Hobby Game Market Strengthens, e indica que de forma geral o mercado de jogos tem se saído muito bem mesmo com a crise na economia norte-americana. No entanto os diferentes tipos de jogos dentro deste mercado de hobby games tem demonstrado níveis de sucesso diferenciados. Os jogos de tabuleiro, ou board games, são os que lideram a categoria atualmente:

Board games continues to be the category with the most heat, with retailers and distributors across the board still reporting increased sales.

Os card games colecionáveis, que no início do ano amargaram as maiores quedas de vendas estão se reestruturando e voltando lentamente ao posição de destaque na categoria dos jogos:

Collectible Card Games as a category are bouncing off the bottom, with the top brands getting most of the benefit: Magic: The Gathering and Yu-Gi-Oh! in the hobby, and Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh! at mass.

E finalmente, as notícias em relação as vendas dos role playing games não são tão boas assim:

The roleplaying game category remains deeply troubled, with most brands down, and the gap between Dungeons and Dragons and the rest growing.

Profundamente problemática é algo que  eu não esperava ouvir sobre a categoria dos RPGs, embora a segunda parte seja esperada – que a distância entre o título mais famoso do mercado, o Dungeons and Dragons e os outros produtos da categoria está aumentando cada vez mais. Ou seja, de certa forma o D&D tem se salvado das dificuldades que os outros títulos tem encontrado, talvez pela força da marca que existe a mais de 30 anos, pelo investimento financeiro maciço da Wizards of the Coast, ou provavelmente ambos os fatores. Os top 5 na categoria são:

A lista é praticamente igual a que tínhamos no início do ano, com a única alteração sendo a entrada do Song of Ice and Fire da Green Ronin no lugar de Star Wars da WotC. E tem me surpreendido a longevidade doWarhammer 40k: Dark Heresy, que desde o segundo semestre de 2008 mantém a segunda posição. Agora é ver como esta lista se reconfigura com a chegada do Pathfinder, se tivesse que apostar colocaria minhas fichas que ele já entra em quarto ou até mesmo terceiro no próximo top5 da ICv2 visto o impacto que causou em seu lançamento na GenCon.

Settlers of Catan permanece soberano, aliás como o Ticket to Ride e Carcassonne, mesmos integrantes do top3 do início do ano. As novidades foram as entradas do LeHavre e L-C-R nas últimas posições da lista.

A categoria das miniaturas não-colecionáveis é um campo de batalha entre a hegemonia da Games Workshop, velha líder do ramo, contra a mais nova Privateer Press. Novamente tenho alguma expectativa que talvez a chegada do Pathfinder tenha algum efeito sobre esta categoria, já que a Paizo fechou um acordo para que a Reaper Miniatures produza as figuras baseadas em sua nova linha de RPG.

É, o card game do Pokemon continua firme e forte, e recuperou o topo de praticamente todas as categorias depois de tê-las perdido no início do ano para o tal Bakugan, que aliás nem deu sinal por aqui. Me surpreendeu o D&D Miniatures ainda em 6°. A lista do top 5 geral dos jogos colecionáveis só tem pesos pesados: Pokemon, o chatíssimo Yu-Gi-Oh!, nosso bom e velho Magic, World of Warcraft e Star Wars Minis.

Parece que o lançamento da 4ª edição realmente foi muito bem sucedido, pelo menos em termo de vendas, e pelo segundo ano consecutivo as vendas da categoria hobby games se mantiveram estáveis ou com um pequeno aumento. Mas dentro da grande categoria que são os hobby games ( que incluem board games, RPGs, miniaturas e card games) a diferença me parece no papel que os cards tiveram ano passado em comparação com este ano. Em Agosto de 2007 a ICv2 nos brindou com:

The quarterly ICv2 market report on game sales in the ICv2 Guide to Games #46 reported gains in all games segments over-all, but particularly strong sales at mass, with sales of the Pokemon TCG, in particular, described as ‘on fire.’

Um ano depois, agora em 2008 temos:

Board games and the big launch for Dungeons and Dragons 4th Edition kept the game category steady to up a little in the hobby channel in the second quarter, according to the ICv2 Guide to Games #58, released at Gen Con. With high gas prices driving a trend toward in-home entertainment, and a good value proposition in terms of hours of entertainment per dollar spent, board games may even be benefiting from economic conditions.

D&D blew away expectations, with almost everyone we talked to surprised by how well the launch of 4th Edition has done. The success of 4th Edition also spilled over into sales of D&D Miniatures, which have also done well recently.

Collectable games are feeling the pinch, both from the relatively high cost to participate and from declining numbers of store visits, which are required to keep feeding collectable game purchases.

Enquanto os hobby games se mantiveram estáveis ou com pouco crescimento, dentro da categoria houve uma queda dos card games e aumento dos board games e RPGs, que mantiveram a categoria apesar da queda dos cards. Bacana!

Falando especificamente dos Top 5 RPGs mais vendidos, tivemos um resultado parecido com o de Agosto do ano passado, mas com uma leve dança das posições. D&D continua em primeiro como sempre, mas em segundo ao invés do Star Wars Saga RPG, que aliás caiu fora da lista, aparece o Warhammer 40K: Dark Heresy, que curiosamente foi cancelado pela Games Workshop e posteriormente adquirido pela Fantasy Flight, e continua com um futuro meio indefinido. Em terceiro temos o World of Darkness, que subiu uma posição, e que se posso arriscar um palpite, estará na segunda posição no próximo ranking em Dezembro. Depois temos o ressurgimento de Shadowrun e por último o Exalted, que ocupa o lugar antes preenchido por seu primo Scion. Todo mundo em casa, e a White Wolf feliz!

Destaques, claro, para o Fan Choice Best Publisher, que foi para a Paizo e deve continuar assim nos próximos anos, e para o Product of the Year para o Changeling: The Lost da White Wolf. Estou esperando o post do Sooner, o especialista em White Wolf de plantão, falando disso no blog dele!

Erik Mona, cabeça da Paizo postou um relato obviamente animado sobre a performance da editora na Gen Con desde ano:

Gen Con is awesome. It really is the best convention of the year, and given how damn hard everyone at Paizo has been working to build toward this moment, it’s definitely a mile-marker for the year. In fact, as a publisher I tend to measure my years from Gen Con to Gen Con, as we always release the biggest products of the year at the con and I always get a chance to meet with old friends I only get to see once a year.

This Gen Con has been particularly sweet.

We sold out of our print edition of the Pathfinder RPG Beta Playtest Edition in 9 hours and 8 minutes. That means that we sold out of every copy we brought for all four days of the show one hour and 9 minutes into the second day of the convention. Not bad. Great, in fact. I couldn’t be happier. The audience is really embracing our take on the game, and I couldn’t be happier. The future seems more assured now than it has at any time in the last two years, since Wizards of the Coast decided not to renew our license to publish Dragon and Dungeon magazines and basically threw our company and my life into turmoil.

The debut of our Pathfinder Society organized play program has been a smashing success. We’re running 25+ 6-person tables every slot at the convention. On Thursday, in the first slot of the convention, I got a chance to run the very first scenario for a table including my old RPGA buddies Rick Brill and Joe Cirillo. Convention gaming used to be a major part of my life, but I’ve fallen away from it in recent years as my convention appearances have become more business-oriented. It was great to game with old friends, and I loved getting back into the swing of things.

Oh, and we kicked some serious ass at the ENnies, the major RPG industry awards. Here’s what we won:

3. Best Monster/Adversary Product: Classic Monsters Revisited

Wow, assim como o básico de Forgotten Realms e o Player’s Handbook do D&D 4ª edição, o Pathfinder RPG Beta Playtest Edition também sumiu do estande da Paizo antes do fim do evento. Esses nerds da Gen Con estão muito frenéticos! O cara tem toda a razão para estar feliz e apostando que o Pathfinder Chronicles Campaign Setting também vai esgotar, afinal a Paizo definitivamente subiu para o ranking das maiores e mais importantes editoras de RPG atuais.

Alguns dias foram bem suados de se escrever, ainda mais depois de quinta quando minha garota voltou da gringa, mas ainda assim, me mantive firme no compromisso nerd, e para minha surpresa não só consegui terminar a parada, como toda a idéia teve resultados bem legais.

Algumas estatísticas legais:

• 2225 acessos em 10 dias.

• Durante a maratona a média diária foi de 222 acessos, enquanto a média do mês anterior foi de 139.
• Recorde de comentários também, 74 em 10 dias, embora um bocado sejam meus.
• O recorde de visitas diárias foi quebrado não uma vez, mas cinco vezes consecutivas, e agora descansa na casa dos 320 acessos em um dia.

Sei que não é grandes coisas comparado a um site de verdade que tem acessos diários na casa dos milhares, mas para algo que eu faço no meu tempo livre sobre um hobby obscuro e nerd, até que está de bom tamanho. Também rolaram umas coisas bacanas nesse período auspicioso de 10 dias, como a força do pessoal do Inominattus e o surgimento do agregador de blogs de RPG, embora o grosso dos acessos no período parece ter vindo por outras vias mesmo.

Além do óbvio – mais postagens geram mais visitas, acho que o interessante da maratona foi ter anunciado antes, e nisso o pessoal já sabia que podia entrar no blog mais de uma vez por dia que teria alguma novidade. Vou tentar fazer coisas assim mais vezes!

Finalmente, uma pesquisa: qual dos 20 posts você mais gostou, e gostari de ver o assunto expandido e abordado novamente? Criei a ferramenta ali do lado, e até sábado que vem a votação está aberta. Alguns tópicos são meio complicados de abordar de novo, mas vou tentar seguir a voz do povo e ver no que dá.

Detalhe para a Paizo destroçando, concorrendo em simplesmente 8 categorias, os caras estão realmente mandando muito bem! Os vencedores dos 7 anos anteriores (assim como algumas fotos terríveis) podem ser vistas no site oficial do prêmio.

Seria realmente muito legal ter algo assim no Brasil, o grande problema seria articular alguém isento o suficiente e com legitimidade para eleger os melhores lançamentos do ano por aqui… Ainda assim acho que seria uma boa idéia para se levar adiante.

Foi uma matéria realmente fácil e divertida de escrever. Nada mais legal que passar por uns 40 livros e ir relembrando o que cada um tem de legal, e como podem (ou não) acrescentar uma vida útil a edição 3.5 por mais uns bons anos. Modéstia a parte, acho o resultado final é uma lista bem heterogênea e que da corda para mais uns bons 5 ou 10 anos de jogo com a terceira edição.
